Krug wins in the Skip Barber Race Series at VIR

Updated: Jun 27, 2022

Alton, VIRGINIA, June 21, 2021 --- Bobby Krug claims a third-place and first-place finish in the second round of the Skip Barber Race Series at VIRginia International Raceway.

In the practice sessions, Krug was unable to start Practice 1 but made up for the lack of track time with a third place time in Practice 2 behind Elvis Rankin and William Lambros. After storms blew through the area, the weather cooled off for the morning qualifying session as Krug fell a bit short, placing himself sixth for Race 1.

Early in Race 1, Krug was able to maintain his sixth place position through the opening laps of the race. Contact between two drivers ahead allowed Krug to pick up two spots and caused a full-course caution. Rolling off from fourth on the restart, Krug was able to make a pass on Mikkel Gade for the final podium position going up in the Esses in the closing laps of the race.

The starting lineup for Race 2 was determined by fastest lap ran in Race 1, placing Krug in second place - his first ever front row starting position in the Skip Barber Race Series. Unfortunately, Krug wasn't able to take advantage of the front row starting spot as he misjudged the start and lost a position before Turn 1. Krug was able to muscle his way past Lambros but laps later was chased down and passed by Rankin. In the final corners on the final lap, Rankin and Alianell both made mistakes battling each other, causing Rankin to go four-off and slowing Alianell, allowing Krug to make a final dash for the lead. In a drag race to line, Krug was able to beat Alianell by a near margin of 0.038; marking Krug's first win in the Skip Barber Race Series.

"Winning in the Skip Barber Race Series is the peak of my motorsports career to this point," Krug said. "I've now added my name to a list of legendary drivers that won in this series: Newgarden, Rossi, Perez, Andretti, Montoya."
